Updates from the lab, the desk, and the inbox
2026
Attended the Ultrahigh Field MRI Symposium
A day at the Stark Neurosciences Research Institute among people pushing ≥7T MRI — preclinical diffusion, infant fMRI on a clinical 7T, and grad-student work mapping arterial pulsatility and CSF flow.
Attended the CAIC Launch Conference at Purdue
Two days at the Cognition, Agency & Intelligence Center launch — and the "Cognitive Cousins" idea that intelligence can emerge from systems nothing like us yet behave familiarly.
Posted SuCor as a preprint on arXiv
A parameter-free, self-regularized optimal-transport method for susceptibility distortion correction in diffusion MRI — TOPUP-quality results in roughly 12 seconds on a single CPU core.
Humanity's Last Exam published in Nature
Contributed to HLE, a 2,500-question benchmark for expert-level reasoning, now used to stress-test frontier LLMs.
2025
Attended the IU LAB industry workshop & poster session
An industry workshop and poster session hosted by the IU Launch Accelerator for Biosciences with BioCrossroads and the IU Program in Neuroscience — research posters and career conversations at the academia–industry crossroads.
Poster on mitigating catastrophic forgetting in LLMs
Presented "Mitigation of Catastrophic Forgetting in Large Language Models" at Luddy — showing that even a little experience replay markedly stabilizes a fine-tuned LLaMA's earlier reasoning. Started as a class project, now growing into more.
Passed my PhD qualifying exams
Officially a PhD candidate — coursework done, research questions formed, and cleared to dive deeper into medical imaging, physics, and AI.
Attended the IU Radiology Edwin F. Koch Visiting Professor Series
Sat in on talks on radiomics & radiogenomics of glioblastoma and a 20-year journey with ML in neuroimaging — a reminder that robust physics makes for trustworthy features and credible models.
Jose Blakeley PhD Summer Research Award
Funding to build generalizable AI models for brain MRI — unified representations that transfer across parcellation, stroke detection, and segmentation.
Spoke at the DIPY Workshop 2025
Presented recent advances in MR distortion correction — both deep-learning models and traditional optimization-based approaches.
2024
Presented MRI preprocessing work at RSNA 2024
Shared state-of-the-art MRI preprocessing in Chicago — and got my own brain scanned on a low-field scanner to see its AI denoising first-hand.
TA for Neuromatch Academy's NeuroAI course
Guided students through attention, neuro-symbolic methods, and meta-RL — where neuroscience, cognitive science, and AI meet on the problem of generalization.
Genomics AI Researcher at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center
Built BERT- and Llama-based pipelines to extract genomic phenotype terms from clinical notes, with retrieval-augmented generation and a transformer OCR step to digitize handwritten doctor's notes.
Presented at ISMRM 2024, Singapore
Showed fast susceptibility distortion correction for diffusion MRI via style transfer and nonrigid registration — and earned a Student Travel Grant (top 5% of presenters worldwide).
Spoke at the DIPY Workshop 2024
Walked through distortion correction in diffusion MRI and previewed the method we presented at ISMRM 2024.
2023
Finished my M.S. in Intelligent Systems Engineering
Wrapped up the master's at Indiana University while carrying on into the PhD.
Mentored Google Summer of Code for DIPY
Mentored GSoC projects on diffusion MRI, machine learning, and medical visualization under the Python Software Foundation.
Spoke at the DIPY Workshop 2023
Walked the community through susceptibility distortion correction in diffusion MRI at the online DIPY workshop.
IU Program in Neuroscience PhD Fellowship
Awarded to incoming PhD students after a competitive interview — a vote of confidence I'm still grateful for.
2022
Started contributing to DIPY
Joined Diffusion Imaging in Python as an open-source developer — built a 3D/4D viewer for comparing diffusion MRI volumes.
Began my dual PhD in Neuroscience & Intelligent Systems Engineering
Started at the Luddy School, Indiana University — new notebooks, new GPUs, and a lot of MRI.
2021
Joined the Garyfallidis Research Group
Began research on distortion correction in diffusion MRI — the thread that runs through most of my work since.
Arrived at Indiana University for my M.S.
Moved to Bloomington to start the master's in Intelligent Systems Engineering.
